Ryan Szeto – Owner

BACS, CFT, CES, PES, SSC

Being involved in many sports throughout his entire life, Ryan devoted much of his time to training and learning the aspects of fitness to compete at the elite level. His two main passions growing up were hockey and soccer. Inspired by many coaches of those sports, he began sharing his knowledge by volunteering at soccer camps and helping any youth teams that needed coaching. From there, Ryan realized that teaching and coaching other individuals was something he really enjoyed.

Ryan attended Cape Breton University in 2004 with a renewable athletic scholarship for soccer. He spent his first two years studying the BBA program but decided to stick to his passion of sports and graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in Community Studies Sport option. Just after university, Ryan began pursuing towards personal training and specialist certifications from two world leading organizations. He obtained his Fitness Training Certification, and Strength & Conditioning Certification through International Sports Sciences Association. Shortly after, he went on to certify himself as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist through National Academy of Sports Medicine. Both of these organizations are NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) and CHEA (Council for Higher Education Accreditation) accredited, each with well over 100,000 members in over 80 countries worldwide.

Ryan has continued his education through the study of FMS techniques and a mentorship under world renowned strength coach/trainer Mike Boyle in his gym in Boston, which was rated #1 in America by Men’s Health Magazine. Ryan is also currently pursuing a specialist certification in Myoskeletal Therapy and CSCS from the National Strength Conditioning Association. The Cape Breton Major Bantam Cougars, Cape Breton Major Midget Tradesman, and CBU men’s/women’s varsity Soccer teams currently use Ryan and SFS as their strength and conditioning consultant (conducting and monitoring programs). Most of Ryan’s private clients are athletes from various sports, however he specializes in hockey strength/conditioning and post rehabilitative techniques.

“My aim is to motivate and guide each and every client into safely achieving their desired fitness goals, whether they are an elite athlete or any individual just looking to lose a few pounds or get back on their feet after an injury. I am strongly devoted and confident in sharing what I have learned to make a positive and life-long impact on each client’s fitness and well-being!”

CPT, B.Ed., B.Sc.

Through all of my years in school, I have always been actively involved in sports and fitness. When I decided to pursue a certificate in personal training, I knew that working at Szeto Fitness Studio was the best place to learn and train.

My secondary education started at Cape Breton University in 2004, where I spent four years obtaining at Bachelor of Science (Math) degree. I then attended Mount Saint Vincent University for two years, where I obtained a Bachelor of Education degree. During my time at MSVU, I had the chance to play university soccer, and was named captain of my team. We always trained hard on and off the field, and we learned that hard work and ethic paid off by making a good run in playoffs my second year. I utilized my soccer knowledge and passion for teaching by coaching the Sydney Academy boys soccer team. From there I realized that fitness and coaching was a huge desire in my life, so after my B.Ed., I acquired my CPT through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Learning the specifics of the kinetic chain through my CPT, a 60-hour mentorship with Ryan and the SFS team, and having a teaching degree makes me confident that I can deal with a wide range of clientele. I believe that anyone who walks through the doors of SFS will be satisfied with their experience. Having a private atmosphere with a qualified trainer is a great opportunity for you to meet your training needs!

My goal as a trainer is to have my clients walking out the door each and every day with a smile, feeling good about their time at SFS. Whether it is long or short term goals, every session counts, and being there for my client is my number one priority!

Growing up I was always highly involved in several sports, with soccer and rugby being my favorite. Not only do I enjoy training at the gym, but running has also become a passion of mine. I plan on running a half marathon this September (21 k), with the hopes of completing a full marathon next year (42 k).

Fitness has always been a love of mine, so I knew early on I wanted to pursue a career in that direction. I obtained my personal trainer certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, which is an internationally recognized organization. I also completed a 60 – hour mentorship under SFS which provided me with a background for functional fitness and training. The area in fitness I’m most passionate about is weight loss. I love helping people achieve their goals safely and seeing the transformation not only physically, but mentally as well.

Currently, I’m a Cape Breton University student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and will transfer to Mount Saint Vincent University into their Bachelor of Science of Applied Human Nutrition (Dietetics Option) for my last 2 years. I will graduate in 2014 from MSVU as a Registered Dietitian.

My hope is to influence every client with direction and motivation so they can safely achieve their fitness goals and make proper nutrition and exercise a lifelong commitment.

I’m a competitive athlete and enjoy playing sports. My passion is the challenge of training and being fit so the decision to become a personal trainer came naturally.

I am certified with International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and currently pursuing a BACS degree at Cape Breton University. I have also studied under Ryan Szeto at Szeto Fitness Studios. I have acquired many other skills in the area of fitness. Some of which include being elected captain of the AAA Sydney Academy soccer team where I lead my team to capture a provincial title. I played soccer at a high level from the age 13-senior, where I also spent two years as a captain on my senior team. This is where I learned more knowledge of how to train and work hard. I went on to receive my coaching certification levels B and C and have since coached many teams including AAA Sydney Academy Boys Soccer, and Various other Teams ranging from ages 4-18.

I worked at the Atlantic Soccer Academy where I trained kids in high level programs and after school programs. I am also a Regional Level Referee in Soccer Nova Scotia. As a trainer my aim is to construct each routine individually to meet the different needs of each client. It is my hope that everyone who trains with us feels satisfied in our services and happy with their results.
